This form of head massage is slowly gaining popularity in the Western world due to its palliative benefits.

How does ayurvedic head massage work?

Every Ayurvedic massage is unique. This is because the therapist first analyzes the patient and then selects a suitable combination of oils and massage techniques based on his or her diagnosis. Herbal oils such as sesame oil, mustard oil, almond oil, coconut oil or olive oil are widely used.

The patient is made to sit on a comfortable chair. Oil is slowly massaged into the head starting from the sides of the head to the scalp.  The therapist uses thumbs and fingers to skillfully manipulate the pressure points on the head, face, neck, and shoulders. He or she may even grasp fistfuls of your hair at the roots and gently tug them from side to side. The therapist then focuses on the temples and slowly squeezes them with the heels of the hand. Then the therapist slowly works his or her way down to the neck and shoulder, gently kneading and squeezing the muscles.
