What is Ayurvedic Massage?

Ayurveda is an ancient system of medicine that was developed in the Indian subcontinent hundreds of years ago.



According to the principle of Ayurveda, the human body is composed of a unique mixture of energies, called ‘dosha’. This unique mixture differs from person to person. A person’s ‘dosha’ determines the kind of lifestyle that that person should lead, the ailments he or she will be susceptible to, the sort of food to be partaken, etc.



Thus Ayurveda bases treatment based on a person’s unique ‘dosha’.

Ayurvedic massage also follows this principle. It seeks to eliminate the toxins in the human body by using a unique set of herbal oils and massage techniques that are determined according to the individual’s energy pattern.

How does Ayurvedic massage work?

No two Ayurvedic massages are the same because they are specially designed for each individual.



Before the massage begins, the therapist will diagnose the patient’s unique ‘dosha’ by asking questions about your health and lifestyle and observing your body composition, skin type, etc. Based on this information the therapist will choose a unique combination of herbal oils to suit you.  The frequency, intensity, and interval of the massage is also determined by the therapist’s diagnosis of your condition.

In addition to traditional massage procedures, Ayurvedic massage also utilizes techniques such as tapping, kneading, and squeezing. It also focuses on stimulation of the various pressure points in the body. A typical session of Ayurvedic massage may last up to one hour. During the massage process, the therapist may also chant to aid the flow of energy into your body.

What are its benefits?

There are many different schools and types of Ayurvedic massage. Each of these different types of massage is good for different ailments. In addition to addressing your particular ailment, an Ayurvedic massage is also an excellent way to get rid of toxins from the body. It boosts the immune system and helps restore and maintain good health.

Precautions

It must always be ensured that the massage therapy is carried out by a qualified therapist. Ayurvedic massage also uses liberal quantities of oil, so wear something that you won’t mind the oil stains on. It is also a good idea to apply a small amount of oil on your body prior to the massage to check if you are allergic to it. Abstain from consuming a large meal, or alcohol a couple of hours before the massage.
