Lymph Edema Treatment

There are number of therapies to treat lymph edema.



Some of them include educating the patients or the masses at large about the condition, manual lymphatic drainage also known as systematic light massage, therapy involving pneumatic pumps, medicated gauze bandages, special garments or clothing and compressions, regular exercise and fitness schedules, hygienic skin care etc. Patients experiencing lymph edema must always consult their medical practitioner before involving in any kind of strenuous exercises.  The affected limbs must not be stressed of strained in any manner and care must be taken that the affected parts are not prone to simple accidents.

Since there is no competent medical treatment for this particular condition and that are prediction of the course of this disease is guarded, most therapist and medical practitioners rely on hands-on treatment and therapy intervention to control the condition.



Some medical doctors are the opinion that keeping a tab and easing off the pain due to the condition and avoiding additional weight gain can help to control lymph edema. One of the most important goals in treating the condition is to reduce the pain and hypersensitivity as much as possible in addition to offering nutritional guidance to the individual.  Controlling the individual into a networking support group can prove to be highly educational information and also provide a social ground for individuals with lymph edema, as these patients are likely to feel ridiculed because of their large size and ungainly appearance of the condition.

Simple exercises play a vital role in boosting the movement of the lymph fluid from the affected parts.



The patient must be encouraged to light exercises that requires or her through the affected parts of the body, while keeping in mind the patient does not undergo any kind of strain or stress due to the exercise. Most physiotherapists concentrate on helping the individual to exercise by gently contracting the muscles in the affected limb. Wrapping the affected arm or the leg with the help of medicated bandages helps the lymph fluid to flow out of the affected parts towards the trunk of the body. The manual lymph drainage massage is highly beneficial in moving the lymph fluids towards the healthy lymph nodules. However the doctor needs to prescribe the manual lymph drainage massage, as this massage can prove to be dangerous to those with skin infections, clots in the blood, heart disorders, or cancer. Pneumatic compression is also used to control the condition by wearing a sleeve over the affected part of the body.  This particular sleeve in linked to a pump that occasionally inflates the sleeve thus putting pressure the affected limb. Compression garments or clothing is made from special material and is distinguished through its long sleeves and stockings made into compress the affected part of the body.
