Leg Massage TherapyWhy do my legs hurt? Our legs and feet bear the weight of our entire body. With obesity on the rise, our legs are put under more and more strain each day. Our sedentary lifestyles ensure that our muscles are not exercised or stretched. Gradually over a period of time, the muscles become weaker and weaker. With increasing weight, and decreasing muscular strength, it is a small wonder that leg ache has become such a common phenomenon. What can I do to ease the pain? One of the best ways of relieving leg pain is by getting a leg massage. A leg massage will allow the leg muscles to relax and heal. This is especially important after exercise or in jobs that involve a lot of standing or walking. Massage warms and stretches the contracted muscles and allows them to relax, thereby easing and preventing further pain. Leg massage also stimulates the blood supply to the muscles and makes them strong. It can also help prevent the formation of cellulite on the thighs. How do I give a leg massage? During a typical massage session, the therapist will make you lie down on a flat surface such as a massage table. If oil is being used to aid the massage process, the therapist will rub some massage oil between his or her palms and then gently apply oil on both the legs from the ankles to the hips, using long, gentle, circular strokes. The therapist will then knead the calves and thighs, taking care not put too much pressure on the knee pits. After this, a wringing motion is used to massage the entire leg from the ankle to the buttocks. When massaging the knee cap care is taken not to use too much pressure. The therapist may also use his or her thumbs to gently massage the area around the knee cap instead of directly applying pressure on the knee cap itself. Depending on the comfort level of the patient, the therapist may use the knuckles of both hands to gently knead the buttocks. Most people don’t realize it, but sitting on a chair all day, really causes the buttocks to hurt. The therapist will then slowly work his or her back to the ankles, taking care to avoid the knees. Once the therapy session is complete you will be left alone to enjoy the deeply relaxing effects of leg massage. |
