Chair Massage Therapy

Chair massage is a form of massage that differs from traditional massage because in this type of massage, the client is not lying in a massage table, but seated in a specially designed kind of chair while he/she receives the massage session. It is also called on-site massage or seated massage.

Any kind of chair could be used for this therapeutic approach, but there is no doubt that most benefits can be obtained if a specially manufactured chair is used.

Among the advantages of chair massage we must mention the fact that sessions are shorter in time, it can vary from 10 to 30 minutes and there is no need to take the clothes off as well as it is not required to use oil, lotions or gels. These mentioned facts are determinant in the recent growth of this kind of massage. People with stressful jobs can take advantage of chair massage during lunch time at work. They renew their energy, release tension and still have time to eat properly just during break time. In fact, some big companies are promoting the use of massage chairs among their employees; this is because corporations have noticed the benefits of a tension free worker who feels relaxed and well mean not only happier employees but better performance from them. Besides, nowadays you can find chair massage practitioners in many public places, like airports, shopping malls, sports clubs, even restaurants so you can take some minutes during your routine to relax body and mind.

Chair massage puts the patient in a position that helps to release tension and relax muscles more easily and naturally and it also makes it possible for the therapist to reach all parts that are commonly tensioned and maybe harder to access in the traditional laying position.

Even though it is based on traditional massage, there are some differences that have to be noted.

Specific chair massage puts you in different position than regular chair. It is almost kneeling, supporting also your forearms, face and chest. It may seem a strange position, but once you try it you can find out it is indeed comfortable and relaxing. It not suitable for pregnant women though. In the session, therapist movements are fast and full of energy. It may be a bit painful but once it finishes the patient feels really much better overall.

Even though traditional massage is widely accepted as a therapy, chair massage is considered more a relaxation technique that is based on the fundamentals of massage therapy and therefore provides many of the derived benefits of it. The traditional massage can be traced back to ancient times, but massage chair is an innovation of our era that takes out the main roots of that therapy and adapts it to a modern lifestyle that has too many stressed and tensed people that need muscle relief and mental relaxation.
