Asian massage therapy can include massage styles like anma and tui na from China, shiatsu from Japan, and Thai massage from Thailand; most of these have their origin in India and Buddhism. Asian massage therapy is a relaxing treatment and uses a range of strokes, gliding, kneading, or cross-fiber friction to work on the muscles and enhance circulation.

Benefits and Features

Each of the massage styles has its benefits. Thai massage essentially has its roots in India. This massage form uses guided stretching and meridian pressure point therapy. It incorporates the ancient breathing technique called ‘pranayama’ which is part of Yoga. This done with the client fully clothed, and the therapist uses his or her body against the client to guide, stretch, and relax the muscles. The benefits of Thai massage include relaxation and strengthening of the nervous system.

Chinese tui na massage therapy involves applying pressure on the body at certain key points. Acupressure helps the body to trigger its own self-healing abilities. This is helpful in relieving headaches, back pain, and migraines, and easing stress and anxiety. It also said to help in weight management.

Shiatsu therapy from Japan involves the balancing of the energy that flows through the body. Shiatsu is done based on a diagnosis and works on the energy channels called meridians. It is holistic method wherein the client gains maximum relaxation. Its benefits include balancing the skeletal system, improving circulation, boosting the nervous system, and providing improved skin and muscle function.

The Indonesian-Javanese massage uses the parts of the hands like palms and knuckles to knead and massage the muscles. Massage oil is used to enhance the healing process. This technique relieves stress and tension and back pain, and it is also beneficial in healing fractures. While the massage may be painful, it is said to be beneficial over a period of time.

In general, Asian massage therapy improves blood circulation, and allows the system to function better as a whole. It alleviates pain and reduces the need to take medication. The therapy is not only good for the physical well-being but also lifts up the spirits and creates emotional wellbeing. However, one should keep in mind that these are alternative forms of treatment and cannot replace allopathic treatment.
