Zen Shiatsu Therapy

Shiatsu is one of the oldest forms of Japanese therapy. This ancient system of therapy is derived from even older medical traditions that were prevalent in ancient China. Shiatsu combines massage therapy with various traditional medicinal herbs to promote health and well being.

Zen Shiatsu combines the therapeutic practices of Shiatsu with the beneficial effects of Zen. This offshoot of Shiatsu is extremely popular in the United States.

How Does Zen Shiatsu Work?

Zen is a Buddhist practice that involves training the mind through the process of meditation. Zen equates perfection with enlightenment and it seeks and encourages this state of perfection in every activity. When Shiatsu techniques are combined with the approach, the therapeutic benefits are increased manifold. Zen Shiatsu concentrates mainly on the meridians or pressure points of the body.

Prior to commencing a session Zen Shiatsu, the therapist enters a deep meditative state of Zen. In this state he is able to detect any imbalances in the patient's body by using his or her hands to scan the patient's body. once the areas of imbalance has been identified, the therapist uses his or her thumb, fingers, palms, elbow, feet and knees to stimulate the various meridian points so as to restore the smooth flow of energy throughout the body.

The patient is required to lie on a massage table or on a Japanese futon dressed in loose clothing. No oils are applied during the therapy session.

The therapist then applies pressure at the various meridian points to stimulate the natural healing powers of the body.

What Are The Benefits Of Zen Shiatsu?

Zen Shiatsu works directly on the body's autonomic nervous system. It helps to soothe frayed nerves and has a calming effect. It also helps to improve the circulation of blood and lymph. This helps to improve the functioning of the various internal organs and strengthen the muscles and other tissue. Zen Shiatsu also helps to stimulate the immune system and boosts the body's natural healing powers.
