Grapefruit Oil - Is Grapefruit Oil is phototoxic? What are the methods to use grapefruit oil?


The grapefruit, or citrus paradise, is native to the tropical areas in Asia.



It is a hybrid variety of the pumello fruit and sweet orange. The grapefruit tree has glossy leaves and white, star-shaped flowers. It grows to a height of over 33 feet. The fruit itself is a citrus fruit and has a yellow-orange skin.



The taste ranges from bitter to bittersweet. Nowadays, the grapefruit is mostly grown in the United States, Israel, and Brazil. Oil obtained from the peel of the grapefruit has been widely used in aromatherapy.

Is grapefruit oil phototoxic? Most citrus based oils contain the chemical furocoumarins, which makes them phototoxic.



However, grapefruit oil does not contain any furocoumarins. In addition, it also contains several other compounds that combat photo toxicity. In this respect, grapefruit oil is considered to be superiors to other citrus based oils, as it is not considered to be phototoxic.

What are the methods of using grapefruit oil? Similar to other citrus oils, the aroma of grapefruit has a refreshing and invigorating effect. It induces positive feelings and improves concentration and self-confidence. Grapefruit oil can be used in aromatherapy diffusers to boost positive emotions and recharge after a hard day’s work. Grapefruit oil is also used in many offices and other establishments to boost the morale and productivity of employees. Grapefruit oil is also an anti-depressant, and the pleasant citrusy aroma of grapefruit can help to chase the blues away. Grapefruit oil is also used in aromatherapy spa treatments. The pleasant aroma of the oil not only helps you feel rejuvenated, but also aids in lymphatic drainage and helps to ease stiff muscles.

In addition to its pleasant aroma, grapefruit is also anti-inflammatory and anti-septic. Grapefruit oil based creams, ointments, and face packs can be used to treat acne, cellulite, and oily skin. Grapefruit oil also helps to tone the skin and is a key ingredient in many skin care products.  Grapefruit oil blends can be used to give a rejuvenating aromatherapy massage that is very beneficial for both the body and the mind.
