Yoga Therapy for Depression

In his, Yoga Sutras, the sage Patanjali has clearly mentioned that man’s inner obstacles are responsible for mental distractions.

These, in turn, lead to depression which, in Yogic parlance, is called Daurmanasya. These inner obstacles can be got rid of through the practice of Yoga techniques.

These include Yoga poses, meditation and breathing exercises.

First of the depressed person stops doing is move around. A depressed person finds regular exercise unbearable.

However, Yoga therapy, beginning with as little as 3 – 4 poses a day for just a few minutes, together with right breathing is not the least bit distressing. In fact, in a little while, it become so pleasant to that the sufferer will soon like to do more and more. The heavy, burdensome feeling of depression will soon give way to eager movement. Yoga therapy practices exert gentle pressure on the glands and organs. This helps them produce the soothing, healing chemical balance so much important to recovery. Through Yoga therapy circulation improves. This sends refreshing and stimulating oxygen to the brain and muscles. In addition, Yoga therapy’s stretching and strengthening movements help get rid of toxins from the body.

Furthermore, Yoga therapy’s deep, invigorating breath techniques help deliver large amounts of fresh oxygen to the brain and other parts of the body. Like a summer breeze, it blows in bringing with it new light and refreshment to the sore parts of the body and – better yet – the mind where depression lies stealthily concealed. Absolute relaxation and dynamic meditation practices show the depressed person how to retrieve the strength and power of his inner self for a support system that keeps him happy through all the ups and downs of his life. At this point of time, there’s little more the depressed person would ask for.
