Yoga and ObesityYoga and obesity is under the scanner for much research and discussion, largely owing to the fat that modern day lifestyle has led to wrong eating habits. Yoga therapy tells us that having high calorie foods like fried foods, confectionery items, sweets, and chocolates and other junk foods are clearly the cause of obesity. Where and how to begin? Yoga therapy postulates that all obese people are aware of what they have to do. It is very basic information. This includes avoiding high calorie foodstuffs, having more fiber and exercising some more. Then again, why has it become so tough to shed weight? It is all in the mind, actually. It is the mind that controls every physical function. The brain two centers, that are responsible for sensing the hunger and fullness subsequent to meals function in perfect coordination under healthy, natural conditions. This helps to maintain normal weight. The functioning of these lower centers can be modified by the mind. Meaning to say, in a human being a eating habit is controlled more by a state of mind than by an instinct of hunger as in other animals. We have the freedom at the mental level, whether to eat more or less because it’s all in the mind. Subsequently, we are also able to control our eating habits through voluntary awareness rather than as a reflex. However, as we get guided by a weakness of our sense pleasures we lose that control. As a result we become slaves to our own inner cravings. If your mind gets disturbed as a result of long standing stress and tensions, it can also be the cause of abnormal eating patterns. So, lack of control over your emotions causes disturbed appetite. This is felt in the satiety centers, a common experience that you may gain or lose weight if you are down in the dumps or worried. So, the most crucial element in managing obesity becomes mind management. Yoga is the best tool to cultivate a healthy and happy way of controlling one’s weight through control of the mind. Because., eventually, mastery over the mind is Yoga. |
