How Is Hypothyroid Caused
Hypothyroidism is caused when the thyroid gland produces insufficient quantities of the thyroid hormone. Hypothyroidism affects approximately three per cent of people all over the world. The incidence of this condition is higher in developing countries where it is caused due to a deficiency of iodine in the diet. Pregnant women are also more susceptible to this condition, especially for one year after giving birth. Hypothyroidism can also be inherited genetically. The symptoms associated with hypothyroid include rapid weight gain, lethargy, cramps and joint pain, constipation, and brittle finger nails.
Treatment For Curing Hypothyroid
The ancient Indian therapeutic discipline of Yoga is an excellent holistic method of treating hypothyroid. Yoga involves a number of gentle, stretching postures that increase the flexibility and reduce pain and stiffness in the muscles and joints. Regular practice of Yoga also helps to boost energy levels and reduce stress.
The Sarvanga Asana or Shoulder stand is considered to be especially beneficial for the treatment of hypothyroid. The thyroid gland is located just below the Adam’s apple. The inverted posture of the Sarvanga Asana allows oxygen-rich blood to flow directly into the thyroid gland without having to counteract the force of gravity. This improves the functioning of the gland. The added pressure on the gland also squeezes out stagnant secretions.
In order to perform the Sarvanga Asana, lie on a comfortable yoga mat on your back with your arms at your side. While inhaling, slowly raise both your legs until your toes point to the ceiling. While exhaling, lift your hips slowly and slowly place your hands on your hips so that your body’s weight is supported by your shoulders. Try to keep your legs and knees straight. This position should be maintained for one to two minutes. You should breathe gently through the nostrils while holding this posture. Return to the original prone position slowly.
The Sarvanga Asana should be followed by the Matsya Asana (Fish pose) in order to maximize the benefits to the thyroid gland. The Matsya Asana also starts from a prone position with your hands by your side. Inhale and slowly raise the head, shoulder, back and upper arms off the floor by arching your back. Ensure that your buttocks are touching the mat. Tilt the head back. The top of the head should be placed flat on the Yoga mat. Raise your elbows off the floor and bring your hands up just below the chest with the finger tips joined in the Anjali Mudra. Hold this posture for about two minutes while breathing gently and then slowly return to the prone position.
