Causes of hypothyroidism: There are two main causes of hypothyroidism.

When the thyroid gland is inflamed, then several of the cells in the gland are damaged and cannot produce enough hormone. Autoimmune thyroiditis is a kind of thyroid inflammation that happens because of the patient's own immune system.

The second reason is medical treatment options. Sometimes, thyroid problems are treated by surgically removing the entire gland or a part of it. So if the thyroid producing cells in the body cannot meet the needs of the body, then the person can develop hypothyroidism. Treatment for thyroid cancer and goiters involves killing a part of the thyroid gland.

Hypothyroid symptoms: Some of the symptoms of hypothyroidism include hair loss, dry and tough skin, dry hair, difficulty in losing weight or weight gain, weakness, fatigue, depression and irritability. Intolerance to cold, muscle aches and cramps, constipation, loss of memory, abnormal menstrual cycles, and decreased libido are some of the other symptoms of this problem.

The symptoms might vary and can depend on how severe the problem is. Generally, people have a mix of symptoms and sometimes these are so subtle that you may not even notice. If you do notice any of these symptoms, it is advisable to discuss these with your doctor as well as an endocrinologist.

Hypothyroid treatment: One can diagnose hypothyroidism with a simple blood test. But in some cases, people might need to get more tests done to diagnose and confirm the problem. You also need to speak with an endocrinologist and let him read your test reports.

Do remember that this problem can be cured with a small pill that you will have to take once a day. You might need a combination of pills, but all that depends upon your condition and the doctor's prescription. The treatment plan can be different for different people.

Choosing a physician: You might want to know how to choose a doctor to help treat your hypothyroidism. First, speak with your family doctor. He will ask you to do certain tests. They will also check the front part of your neck for the possibility of goiter or enlarged thyroid. Your thyroid levels will also be tested through blood tests. If you have any sort of thyroid disease, then the physician will recommend you to an endocrinologist, who specializes in the endocrine system.
