Managing stress is essential if you wish to eliminate it from your life. Begin with looking for the reasons behind the stress. Accept responsibility for the part you play in creating stress as well. It will be easier to maintain stress levels and deal with them once you do this. Start a stress journal to keep track of things that stress you out. Eliminate unnecessary stress and learn to say no. If you cannot avoid a stressful situation, learn to alter it. Adapt to the situation or the person that is behind the stress. Change your attitude towards yourself as well.

The emotional symptoms of stress include changes in sleeping or eating habits, frequent flare ups, body aches, anger, anxiety, depression, irritability and frustration. Some of the mental symptoms of stress are forgetfulness, a lack of concentration and being disorganized. Mental stress can also take its toll on your work and behavior - absenteeism, decreased productivity, angry outbursts, crying spells and suicidal thoughts are symptoms as well.

Depression affects your daily routine and can rob you of the energy to do even simple chores. The cause of depression determines the kind of depression you have. The physical symptoms of depression range from headaches, chest pain, backaches, exhaustion, and dizziness to sleeping and digestive problems.

Anxiety is the body's natural response to danger. Some physical symptoms of anxiety are sweating, heart palpitations, trembling, nausea, numbness in hands or legs, restlessness, irritability and frequent urination.

The five chronic symptoms of stress are:-

  • Dependence issues - on alcohol and drugs
  • Behavioral - eating more or less, isolation
  • Cognitive - constant worrying, memory loss, poor judgment
  • Physical - nausea, chest pains etc.
  • Emotional - depression, loneliness, moodiness

Stress affects each person differently but the most common symptoms of stress are general anxiety, frustration, sleep problems, headaches, fuzzy thinking and more frequent colds or flu.
