Varicose Veins Treatment With Yoga

Of all the veins in the human body, the veins in the leg have the toughest time ferrying blood back to your heart. Varicose veins are the result of damage to the valves in the veins that prevents vascular movement from flowing in one direction, as it normally does. In turn, this causes the blood to get clogged and the vein swells. Yoga has proven an effective tool in preventing as well as treating this painful condition. Besides being an unsightly condition, these puffed-up veins are the cause of a lot of pain that, can lead to more severe problems.

In emergencies, even surgery is advised. However, in mild and moderate cases, Yogasanas (poses) and other practices are recommended. It has been found that, of all of them, the inverted poses are the most beneficial. In fact, the posture widely known to be most effective, clinically, in all cases is Sarvangasana (The Shoulder Stand). In this asana Yoga Pose) the legs are raised up and the head and torso are resting on the ground, so the force of gravity gets reversed. In this posture, the blood is able to drain from the lower legs back to the heart. This reduces the pressure of the clogged blood in the leg veins. This pose, if done once daily (recommended holding time of 3 – 5 minutes) is bound to deliver excellent results. On standing up, you will find that the flow of blood in the legs is very much improved.

Other Yogasanas (poses) include:

  • Sirshasana (Headstand)
  • Viparita Karani (Inverted legs to the wall pose)
  • Tadasana (Tree pose)
  • Paschimottanasana (Seated hands to feet pose)
  • Pawanmuktasana (Wind relieving pose)
  • Janu Sirshasana (Seated one leg to knee pose)
  • Gomukhasana (Cow pose)
  • Vajrasana (Thunderbolt pose)
  • Supta Vajrasana (Supine Thunderbolt pose)
  • Shashankasana (Rabbit pose) and
  • Shavasana (Corpse pose)

Pranayama (Breathing Exercises):

Do a few rounds of Kapalabhatti (Skull cleansing) followed by 30 – 35 rounds of Anuloma-Viloma (Alternate nostril breathing).

Yoga Diet:

Follow a Sattvic diet, (simple, pure and predominantly vegetarian) free from too many spices. Also, for improved overall blood circulation and a healthy supply of minerals and vitamins to the legs, consume high-fiber vegetables and fruits. Research has also proven that a diet which is rich in flavonoid foods like berries helps prevent the worsening of the condition and helps maintain vein wall integrity. In addition, tea brewed from buckwheat, which is high in rutin, has been known to alleviate Varicose Veins symptoms.
