Yoga helps to reduce weight. You can also maintain the reduced weight with yoga, but only with a well balanced diet. The Yoga Poses Which Help To Reduce And Rebalance Your Weight Are –

  • Sarvangasana (The Shoulder-Stand Pose)
  • Halasana (The Plough Pose)
  • Bhujangasana (The Cobra pose)
  • Salabhasana (The Locust pose)
  • Dhanurasana (The Bow Pose)
  • Naukasana (The Boat Pose)
  • Chakrasana (The Wheel Posture)
  • Paschimottanasana (Back Spine stretching Pose)
  • Padahastanasana (The Hand to feet posture)
  • Janu Sirshasana (The Posterior stretch)

These yoga poses work on the glands, massage different organs and muscles, strengthen the weak areas of the body and reduce weight to the optimum level.

You should also do pranayama or controlled breathing everyday which helps in losing weight. If each of these techniques namely Bhastrika (The Bellows), Kapalbhati (The Cleansing breath), Ujjayi (Energy Renewing breath), Uddiyana Bandha (Abdominal Lock) is done for 3 to 5 minutes (max. 30 min. duration) every day, weight loss will be visible in no time.

When we talk about well-balanced diet, the quantity and quality of food are the most important factors. We should eat fresh, clean and untreated food in moderation. Some basic principles of eating are to eat slowly, to eat only 75% of the capacity and to eat at least two hours before bed time though it is desirable to finish dinner by 7.30 p.m. Have at least two liters of water every day, preferably warm water which help in cutting down the fat and control your weight. If you start and end your day with a glass of warm water, you will feel a world of difference.

In yoga, food is classified in three categories – Sattvic (pure and superior quality), rajasik (medium quality) and tamasik (inferior quality). Diet comprising of lot of fiber rich vegetables, green salad, fruits, cereals, whole grains, yoghurt, honey come under the category of sattik. The sattik or vegetarian food keeps one healthy and vigorous. Even amongst vegetables and fruits, it is better to avoid those which are starchy and have high sugar content if you want to loose weight. Vegetables to be avoided are potatoes, beet, corn, parsnip, peas, plantains, sweet potatoes, winter squash etc. Low carb vegetables are sprouts, leafy green, herbs, radishes, broccoli, cucumber, asparagus, leek, celery, peppers, snow peas, turnip, carrot, okra, eggplant, cabbage etc. Low carb fruits are lemon, raspberries, cranberry, blackberry, rhubarb, papaya, guava, strawberry, melon, watermelon, peach, apples and so on. These have low to medium sugar content. Avoid bad carbs like white flour and sugar as well as pre-cooked items, fried and oily foods, convenience/fast food, aerated drinks among others.

If you make all three your way life i.e. practicing yoga poses, pranayama and well balanced diet, you will feel young and vibrant and in a perfect state of health and equilibrium.
