My husband scan reports confirms that he has Non Alcoholic Steatosis Hepatitis? Any medication?

Steatosis Hepatitis also known as fatty liver disease (FLD) is a condition whereby large amounts of fat accumulate in the liver. Alcohol consumption is the major cause but since your husband does not consume it, he seems to be suffering from non alcoholic FLD which can be caused by faulty metabolism, malnutrition, having type 2 diabetes, high cholesterol, being overweight, a high level of triglycerides in the blood, reactions to medication or things like toxic mushrooms, inflammatory bowel disease. This condition is also observed in those who are HIV positive.

There is no particular medication for non alcoholic fatty liver and the only way to battle it is to reduce the amount of fat in the liver. Of the precautions to be taken, if you’re husband is overweight, he should try to lose at least 2-3 pounds a week by reducing his daily calorie intake. Light daily exercise and following a healthy diet plan that includes fresh fruits and vegetables will help although the process is slow and requires patience. The diet should include whole grains like brown rice and whole-wheat bread, and food products such as fish, nuts, and olive oil. They contain healthy unsaturated fats as opposed to food that contains saturated fat. Shift to lean meat and milk without fat when cooking food. If he has tried to lose weight earlier and it hasn’t worked out it would be advisable to see a doctor or dietician, to put him on a regular diet. The exercise plan can be slipped into his daily routine by taking the stairs instead of the elevator and walking to the grocery store rather than taking the car. If you are unused to regular strenuous exercise, consult the doctor again before embarking on it as it may otherwise lead to complications. Care must be taken while consuming over the counter medication and using household chemicals. Instructions must be read carefully and followed meticulously.

It is necessary to detoxify the liver and heal its cells in this condition for which you could mix some artichoke, milk thistle, dandelion and liquorice, and make sure your husband consumes it once a day. Fish oil consumed in quantities of 3-5 gms per day should also help. Drink 3-4 liters of water a day, as this will also act as a detoxifying agent and a daily intake of a spoon of honey mixed in a glass of warm water every morning will aid in the weight loss.
