I have chest infection, should I use all the time steroid inhaler, is there any home remedies for it?

A chest infection affects the airways and hampers the proper functioning of the respiratory system, including the lungs. It could include several ailments of the respiratory system such as bronchitis and pneumonia. Usually a fever accompanies these conditions. There is also an excess production of mucus, and pus formation may also take place. As a result the airways swell and breathing becomes difficult. Chest infections can occur in individuals of any age, but they are generally more common in children and older people. People who smoke are also at an increased risk of developing chest infections. If left untreated, a chest infection can prove to be a very serious condition.

Symptoms

A cough is the most common symptom of a chest infection. The cough usually draws up thick phlegm which has accumulated in the inner chest. These infections tend to occur more commonly during the winter and autumn months. Pneumonia is a type of chest infection which requires early medical treatment. It is recommended that mild cases of pneumonia be treated immediately so that further aggravation is prevented. Pneumonia affects the small air sacs that are located within the lungs. Fluid accumulates in these air sacs and causes inflammation. This condition usually results after a bacterial infection. Bronchitis results from a viral infection that affects the bronchial lining in the lungs. The symptoms of bronchitis are usually a cold and flu. Individuals who smoke are particularly at risk for developing this infection. Other symptoms may include wheezing, dryness of the mouth, coughing, headache, appetite loss and breathing problems. The affected individual must be kept hydrated at all times, as dehydration is a major concern.

Home Remedies For Chest Infection

Chest infections are usually effectively treated with antibiotics. Steroid inhalers may not be very effective in reducing the symptoms, but they do lower the occurrences of flare ups. It is advisable that you consult your doctor before taking any over the counter medication or inhalers. Steam inhalation is very beneficial in providing relief from chest infections. The steam helps to clear the congestion within the chest and air passage. Adding essential oils to the water during your baths is also known to be effective in alleviating congested airways. Application of aromatherapy oils such as eucalyptus oil to the chest also helps to ease chest infections. Warm compresses may also be used to naturally reduce congestion in the chest. Sipping on hot herbal teas is another effective way to obtain relief from chest infections.
