Get Rid of a Glass Splinter from Foot

Here is the best way in which you can rid of a glass splinter from your foot or if there is a broken glass stuck in a child’s foot.

  • Firstly, wash the wound in cold water; doing this will reduce the bleeding while also getting rid of any extra small shards of glass that might be present in the foot.
  • Once you are done with this, place the foot on a solid surface that is well lit; this should give you a good visual of the glass piece.
  • Swab the area with a cotton ball dipped in alcohol.
  • You will need a needle and tweezers. Disinfect them by soaking them in a bowl of alcohol for 5 to 10 minutes.
  • Use the tweezers to remove the shard of glass from the foot. If it is a tiny piece, use the needle and slide it back and forth to release the glass, till you can grab it with a pair of tweezers.
  • Once you have removed the shard of glass, clean the area of the foot again with swabs dipped in alcohol.
  • Apply an antiseptic cream to soothe wound, and bandage the area to avoid infection.

In many cases, in the process of extricating small pieces of glass from the body, you can end up embedding it further in your body. In case this happens, do not panic, as the body will naturally push the offending foreign body out of the skin. Note that this process will take some days. In this time, all you need to do is to keep the wound clean by applying tea tree oil and aloe vera on the wound. Lay a warm towel on the area or dip your foot in warm water daily to speed up this process.

Home Remedies:

Once the glass is out of the foot, you can use certain home remedies to ensure healing.

  • Tea tree oil and aloe vera products help alleviate the pain.
  • You can also apply some freshly ground turmeric that should help heal your wound.
  • Another home remedy that people opt for is castor oil as it draws out things from the skin. Apply castor oil to the injured area, and cover it with a bandage. When you remove the bandage the following day any extra glass piece would have come out.
  • Using a few drops of peroxide is also known to work wonders.
  • One of the simplest remedies is to constantly rub the injured area; the pressure might cause the piece of glass to come out.

While getting rid of glass from the foot is possible at home, it is advisable to visit your doctor to make sure that the foot does not get infected. Do not try removing the glass piece if you are not sure of the proper method. Get medical help at the earliest in such situations.
