Breathing techniques, meditation and asanas practiced in yoga are all very beneficial in maintaining healthy eyes and can also help get rid of spectacles naturally when practiced regularly. These simple exercises can help reduce the strain on the eyes and improve eyesight naturally.

  • Palming is a technique which is very commonly used in yoga to calm the eyes and improve eyesight. This exercise is also beneficial in calming the entire nervous system and recovering from day to day stress. Palming can be performed by rubbing the palms together to generate heat and the placing the heated palms gently on the eyes. It is important to make sure that the palms are cupped over the eyes and no direct pressure is applied on the eyes. The warmth which flows from the palms to the eyes helps in relieving stress and tension in the eye muscles.
  • Trataka or gazing exercises practiced in yoga are especially beneficial to those who want to get rid of their spectacles as well as those suffering from eye diseases. This exercise not only helps improve vision but also improves concentration and calms the mind. Trataka can be practiced while sitting in a comfortable position with an erect spine and gazing at any object such as a picture or a candle directly in front of you. It is vital to gaze at the object without blinking till the eyes get teary. It is important to breathe deeply and avoid excess eye strain while doing this exercise.
  • After this exercise an individual can try concentrating on the tip of his/her nose so that the eyes squint. This is an excellent exercise to improve eyesight naturally and should be practiced regularly.

Benefits of yoga for eyes

One of the biggest benefits of yoga exercises for the eyes is that they not only help to improve eyesight and reduce strain on the eye muscles but they also help in calming and relaxing the entire nervous system. Regular practice of eye exercises in yoga helps in prolonging healthy and strong vision even with progressing age. Exercises like the Suryadhyana (sun gazing) and Chandradhyana (moon gazing) can be performed everyday for improving eyesight naturally and also treating various eye related problems. Suryadhyana or sun gazing should be performed at sunrise and during sun set in the evening. Sun gazing should initially be practiced for 1-2 minutes and can be gradually increased to 10 minutes. This technique basically involves staring at the sun with open eyes but care should be taken that you do not strain your eyes too much. Similarly Chandradhyana or moon gazing is practiced at night time while staring at the moon or stars with relaxed and open eyes.

These exercises not only help in improving vision over a period of time but they also improve concentration and promote overall relaxation. Other simple eyes exercises like nasal gazing, eyebrow gazing and Trataka (object gazing) also have similar benefits and should be practiced everyday for best results. Blinking is another common exercise which can greatly benefit eye health. Blinking the eyes as fast as you can while in a sitting position helps in relaxing tense eye muscles and also improves vision gradually. This exercise should be repeated at least 50-100 times everyday. The main benefits of these simple eye exercises are that they help in strengthening the eye muscles, reduce stress, synchronize the movements of the eyeballs and improve vision. The focusing and accommodating power of the eyes can also be enhanced by practicing these exercises on a daily basis.
