There was a time when plus size women did not have a choice to join any form of exercise. Yoga for plus size women has solved this problem. It is traditional yoga with modifications made to suit the needs of the larger woman. Yoga is a good option for plus size women because it is a gentle form of exercise.

As a plus size woman doing yoga, you must ensure that you are wearing the right type of clothes that allow free movement without sagging and catching at the foot or the waist. The clothes should be free of elastics, buttons and zippers. They should be made of material that can breathe, like cotton, and should not stick to the body.

While practicing Yoga poses, plus size women must keep the following things in mind:

  • While practicing yoga exercises like standing and bending forward, you can spread your legs a little wider for greater balance.
  • While doing sitting Yoga postures, place a folded towel or a big, thick book under your bottom to lift your body up, so that the exercises can be done with ease.
  • While doing the lying down exercises, place a folded towel under your lower back for greater comfort.
  • Use a light hand block to help you touch your toes in the forward bending Yoga exercises if you cannot do this otherwise.
  • If required, bind your bust lightly while practicing Yoga to prevent them from shaking or getting in the way when you do yoga poses.
  • Do not overdo or over stretch while performing any of the ‘asanas’ or exercises. Limit yourself to those exercises that you can comfortably do.
  • Stop if you experience pain during the exercises.
  • Work under the guidance of a teacher who understands and teaches yoga for plus size women.

Yoga for plus size women provides many benefits. It helps you build strength and suppleness in your body. Yoga gives you confidence and aligns your body’s balance. It makes you more comfortable with your body and its requirements. It also brings about a change in attitude and calms the mind.

Do not be embarrassed or self-conscious while doing the exercises. You will be doing these exercises with other women who may be of your size or larger. Choose a teacher who understands your exercise and motivational needs. You will be on your way to a healthier and fitter personality.
