Water Aerobics For Hip/Knee Problems

Hip and knee problems can be very painful, and if the affected joints are not treated and given adequate rest, the condition can be seriously aggravated. The first thing you need to do if you are suffering from hip and knee problems is to consult a doctor or physiotherapist. He or she will be able to guide you towards the most effective techniques to soothe your condition. Many people choose to ignore these problems and continue living an active lifestyle, and end up compounding the injury.

Types Of Cardio For People Having Hip Or Knee Problem

If you are suffering from hip and knee problems, it does not mean that you have to lead a sedentary lifestyle. You can still lead an active lifestyle and exercise regularly, as long as you stay away from high impact sports and activities such as running, basketball, tennis, etc. Why not switch to a low impact cardio exercise that will not only allow your injuries to heal, but will also strengthen the hip and knee joints, and allow you to burn calories at the same time.

Walking is a good option for those suffering from hip and knee problems. Make sure that you invest in a good pair of walking shoes that provide you with adequate support and cushioning. Avoid walking on concrete surfaces. If there is a nearby park with a walking trail, thirty minutes of walking everyday will do you a world of good. Do not over exert yourself, and stop if you feel the slightest twinge of pain.

Another excellent form of cardio for those who have hip or knee problems is swimming. Swimming is such a good exercise because the water acts as a natural cushion. You not only void nasty jerks, but due to the resistance of the water, your joints and muscles become stronger and heal faster.

If you do not know how to swim, and are not inclined to learn, you can try your hand at water aerobics. Water aerobics is like regular aerobics except that it is performed while half submerged in a pool of water. You can even use floatation devices if you are uncomfortable in the water. Water aerobics will not only help to burn the calories but will also help you recover from your hip and knee problems faster.

Equipments such as the elliptical trainer and stationery bicycles are also good options. These machines provide you with a low impact option of performing effective cardio. It is a good idea to consult a professional trainer at the gym before you exercise on these machines as he or she will be able to advice you on the proper technique to be followed so that you do not further aggravate your condition.
