By Patricia | May 19, 2009

Abnormally heavy period, Heavy menstrual bleeding and clotting, Menorrhagia clots: I've been having menstrual problems since I was 16-17. I have heavy period going on for months. I took homeopathic medicine which controlled it for months, but I stopped now I have my period again for weeks and I have clots?

For ladies struggling with such abnormal and irregular menstrual problems, it is always a wiser option to consult with a gynecologist and obstetrician. The symptoms you have described could be indicative of a large number of problems, none of which can be diagnosed without getting a proper and prolonged medical history of the patient. It is highly possible that you are suffering from a common disorder called poly cystic ovarian disorder (PCOD), which is commonly overlooked. The symptoms of this problem are quite similar to the ones you have described here. However, these are not the only symptoms of this disorder and certainly, they are not definitive of PCOD in any way. A medical examination cannot be stressed enough in this case. If you are unable to get a proper medical diagnosis from a gynecologist, then you can also visit your regular family physician. A doctor who is familiar with your medical history will be in a better position to not only come up with an accurate diagnosis, but to also refer you to specialists. A family physican would also advice you on whether or not you are in need of any further testing or consultation. On a generalized level, it is recommended that you take some simple steps to regularize your monthly periods. These will involve lifestyle changes that will lead to your better overall health.

A natural treatment for all types of menstrual problems lies in an herb called Indian ginseng. This herb is easily available in most shops that deal in herbal remedies. It is normally available in pill form and can be taken as per the dosage information supplied on the package. This treatment needs to be tried out for at least a period of six months before you can hope to see results from it. Please do not expect miracles that will treat your problems and cure you overnight. You can also start with a daily regimen of doing Yoga for at least about 45 minutes a day. You can certainly do more if you like, but this should be your minimum time devotion. If you can find a proper trained instructor, you should also focus on the specific asanas that target your menstrual period. There are a number of such asanas, but it is unlikely that an untrained person could guide you in this direction. A common belief is that eating chocolates during your period can help in regularizing them! However, there is no evidence to support this.
