Treatments For Cannabis Addiction

Tetrahydrocannibinol or THC is the active psychoactive compound in cannabis. If it were not for this compound, Cannabis would not be a banned substance in many countries. There is much ongoing debate about THC, its benefits and its toxic effects. There are many other uses of cannabis especially in the areas of pain relief, preventing nausea and vomiting, anorexia and other conditions. The active compound THC is actually beneficial in many ways because of the slew of conditions that it solves. However, for the habitual user, there are many health risks as well. Detoxifying your body of THC and flushing your body of THC is something that your body will do by itself and there is no need to intervene. At the most, all you need to do is increase your water and coffee intake so that the natural excretion mechanism is sped up.

The reason for the hands-off approach is the way that THC interacts with the brain. Therefore, it is important to distinguish between excreting THC from the body and doing away with the craving for THC, or in other words, getting over the addiction to the drug. De-addiction from THC or any other drug requires a great effort and probably going in for counseling would help you remain determined. A part of the de-addiction regime could also involve the drug Naloxone that is available as a generic prescription. THC works on the system by binding itself to naturally occurring cannabinoid receptors in the brain and this triggers the release of dopamine in the brain causing a state of euphoria and painlessness. It is this very euphoric state that Naloxone disrupts by binding to the cannabinoid receptors. Dopamine release by other methods is then used to wean away addiction. Since dopamine is a reward drug, indulging in pursuits that increase adrenaline like physical activity, creative pursuits, and behavior that is more sociable are all linked to dopamine release in the brain.

Once THC is in your system it takes about four to five hours to be dissipated and excreted from your system. This is the safe period. The problem occurs when you would want to indulge in an uptake of THC again, which has to be avoided by keeping oneself busy with other activities or being in the company of people who would frown on the practice of using cannabis. There are no natural ways or quick fixes that can be applied to solve the problem of addiction and it needs to be fought within the mind.
