Meditation Techniques

Meditation is one of the most powerful methods of realizing and channeling the power of the mind.

It is not merely a part of religious rituals, but an essential tool towards developing the mind and becoming one with the universal spirit. Meditation allows a person’s consciousness to be elevated from the self to become a part of the universe.

Why should I meditate?

Meditation is the only conscious method of allowing the mind to be completely relaxed and free from all the voices that clamor inside our heads all our lives. It allows the mind to rest and rejuvenate.

At the same time meditation also helps to teach the mind how to concentrate, thereby enabling us to harness its power to a greater extent. Meditation also lifts the mind from the realms of the mundane and allows it to become one with the universal consciousness.

Mediation is not something that comes to us naturally. It has to be learned and practiced regularly to be effective. Yoga teaches us some effective meditation techniques that allow the mind to surpass the limits of the body.

Some of the common meditation techniques:

  • Sitting Meditation - It is one of the most popular mediation techniques. It plays an important role in many different cultures around the world. Sit down comfortably in a quiet room and close your eyes. Regulate your breathing and slowly begin to empty your mind of all extraneous thoughts. With a little practice you will find it easy to slip into a meditational trance where your thoughts dwell on nothing. The stance itself is not important. You could be sitting cross-legged or any other way, as long as you are comfortable.
  • The Sit-Stand Method - Sitting in one position for a prolonged period of time can pose many problems for novice practitioners. It can lead to leg cramps and back pain. It is also easy to be lulled into sleep when meditating in the same position for a long time. This meditation technique helps you to avoid these pitfalls by allowing you to change your stance every couple of minutes.
  • The Recliner Chair Method - The classic lotus posture is not the easiest of positions to maintain for extended periods of time. A good alternative to this meditation technique is to sit in a recliner chair that in the medium position. Keep your legs straight and allow the soles of the feet to touch each other. This meditation technique allows you to keep your back straight and relieves the aches and pains associated with more traditional postures.
