Yoga Meditation For Positivity

Yoga is more than 5,000 years old, and is probably the oldest set of documented self-improvement techniques. Yoga means ‘union’. Yoga believes in perfect harmony being created by the proper connection of body, breath and mind. The five key elements of yoga are exercise, proper breathing, relaxation, meditation and correct diet – all of which encourage positive thinking.

The poses of yoga are designed to relieve tension from the body and mind, tone up muscles and internal organs and improve flexibility of the muscles, ligaments and joints of the body. According to the practitioners, physical relaxation leads to mental relaxation, which leads to banishment of negative thinking – in a nutshell ‘A healthy mind in a healthy body’.

Here’s how the five tenets of Yoga promote positive thinking and remove negative thinking:

Exercise: Any exercise that you do has the benefit of making you feel fresh and happy by releasing feel-good hormones. The asanas or exercises of yoga increase the flexibility of the body by stretching the muscles. They also open up all the blocked pathways of the chakras or energy centers. In this way, all negative thoughts are removed and replaced with positive thoughts and energy.

Breathing: Yoga and Pranayama or breath exercises lay emphasis on correct breathing techniques. The rhythmic and deep breathing helps us to inhale more oxygen and exhale stale air. It also enhances circulation, which helps to clear toxins from the blood. Thus we feel rejuvenated in body and mind, which again helps us to dispel negative thoughts.

Relaxation: The gentle and rhythmic exercises of Yoga and Pranayama are extremely helpful for relaxing the body and mind. As we breathe deeply and correctly and do the slow stretches of yoga, all the tension drains out of our muscles. This relief from stress and tension makes us happy and has the effect of expelling negative thoughts.

Diet: Yoga prescribes certain diets and eating patterns. Yoga believes that what we eat and how we eat has a definite effect on our body and mind. They advise us to eat fresh foods with lots of fruits and vegetables. This is known as Sattvik diet and encourages positive thinking, as well as higher energy levels. They also advise us to eat in moderation, eat slowly and follow regular meal timings.

Meditation: Meditation is a key part of yoga. The various breathing techniques followed by poses, have a calming effect on the mind. They help to release negative emotions like anger, jealousy, despair and sadness. Yoga gives us the time and space to introspect. This is beneficial in dispelling negative thoughts, which are then replaced with happy and positive thoughts.

Practice of yoga thus definitely helps dispel negative thinking.
