Can My Damaged Ligament Be Treated Without Surgery Through Yoga

Ligaments are tough. They are connective tissue that hold the bones in place and have very little flexibility. Any injury to these tissues is painful and requires time to heal.

Injuries to ligaments are very common as they can occur with just about any type of movements which are sudden or jerky. Movements during daily routines or while performing sports and exercise such as turning around, bending, lifting heavy weight off the ground, falling while walking or running, can cause strain to a ligament resulting in injury. Ligaments can get stretched or strained. In either circumstance, it can result in a sprain accompanied by swelling and inflammation due to lack of blood supply. In extreme circumstances the ligament can be ripped apart partially or even worse, totally. Ligament injuries can also occur over a period of time due to factors such as obesity, pregnancy, or deposition of calcium in surrounding tissue leading to hardening of the ligament.

Restoring a complete ligament tear can get tricky without surgery. Yoga exercises have proven to be very beneficial in restoring the blood flow to the injured area, thereby helping speedy recovery. These exercises focus on restoring the balance of all the three doshas or body elements in the injured area. In cases, where the ligament has not been ripped apart completely, these exercises alone, done with serious dedication and consistency, have proven sufficient in restoring the tear.

Coming to your question, on whether you can treat your injury without surgery and through yoga, it all depends on which ligament has been damaged and how seriously it is so? Depending on which ligaments are injured, yoga exercise can be suggested to improve blood flow to the area to help decrease the swelling and reduce inflammation.

In your case, since the type of ligament and the extent of injury has not been mentioned, particular advice cannot be given. However, since you are keen on recovering without surgery, it would be best to approach a reputed yoga instructor who has expertise in rehabilitating ligament injuries.

However, do keep in mind that ligament injuries can last a life time if not treated completely. Hence your dedication and commitment is a must. The ideal solution would be to use traditional Yoga therapy in tandem with frequent consultations with a doctor. It can be a slow process, but if done accurately, it can be a better alternative to surgery.
