Types of Chiropractic Medicine

Chiropractic medicine is a holistic method of healing and is postulated on the theory that the body has innate powers to cure itself and does not need to depend upon external medications for treatment. David Palmer, its founder, founded this practice on the principle that disease is a result of interrupted nerve energy due to misalignment of the spinal vertebrae. The nerve energy is believed to flow from the brain to various body parts and is responsible for maintaining sound health.

These misalignments are known as subluxations in Chiropractic practice and chiropractors believe that these subluxations are a result of poor posture, injury, age, weight and other factors and need to be corrected at regular intervals to keep the person disease free.

Chiropractic practice is typically done following an analysis, using x-rays, thermography, sonography, bioenergetic synchronization technique, applied kinesiology, contour analysis, and spinal analysis. Many of these methods are not recognized by modern medicine practice and are often attract controversy. However, this practice has a worldwide following and is the second largest primary health care practice.

The spine is divided into three regions, namely the cervical, thoracic and lumbar, followed by the sacrum and coccyx. Chiropractics believe that these regions and the particular vertebra are associated with different body parts and function. Hence, a chiropractor, on determining the disorder makes structural changes to the associated vertebrae or region to cure the ailment.

Although Chiropractic is used to cure all dysfunctions of the body, today chiropractic alternative medicine is typically used to cure musculoskeletal dysfunctions. Joint injuries and pains, muscle soreness, arthritis, myofascial pain or fibromyalgia, joint locking, back pain, and sciatica are some of the most common ailments for which people seek chiropractic care. However Chiropractic medicine is known to cure other ailments such as depression, insomnia, addictions, heart disorders, and digestive disorders.

Chiropractics study is a three year course which is followed by an equally long training period, where an amateur chiropractor gets exposure to hone his assessment and treatment skills and eventually becomes a certified chiropractor. Proponents of modern medicine are of the opinion that chiropractic study is stagnant and is not keeping itself updated to new advances in the medical field and the diseases of the current era.

There are two types of Chiropractic medicine healers: ones that believe that every disease is a result of misplaced vertebrae, and the others that acknowledge external and bodily factors such as germs and hormones and the fact they can cause disease as well. However, their underlying belief remains constant, i.e., spinal misplacement is the cause of lowered immunity and imbalance in hormones causing the disease. These practitioners are open to referring patients to other holistic therapies and if need be to conventional doctors.
