How To Get Rid of Pain While Urinating Due To Urinary Tract Infection (UTI)

By Patricia | May 27, 2009

Many people experience pain or a burning sensation after urination. These may also be accompanied by other signs such as an ache or discomfort in your lower belly, fatigue, a frequent urge to use the bathroom, irritation in the urethral region and fever. These signs are usually indicative of a urinary tract infection (UTI) that is common in the case of both men and women. Other symptoms of a urinary tract infection may include fever, foul smelling urine and on rare occasions, nausea and back pain.

A urinary tract infection can strike at any age regardless of gender. However, girls and women amongst adults and children are more prone to developing urinary tract infections. The reason for this is not well understood but it could be due to anatomical differences between the sexes. The risk of developing a urinary tract infection also increases during pregnancy.

Causes

Under normal circumstances, urine is sterile. Infections occur when bacteria gets into the urine and multiply. These bacteria then move into the urinary tract resulting in a UTI.

Certain people are more prone to developing urinary tract infections. These include people with conditions that result in a partial obstruction of the urinary tract, such as kidney and bladder stones. Medical conditions that result in an incomplete emptying of the bladder such as an enlarged prostate and bladder decompensation after menopause, immune-compromised people such as those with AIDS and diabetes, and women who are pregnant, sexually active or use a diaphragm for birth control are all at increased risk of developing urinary tract infection.

Home Remedies

If you experience any of the symptoms of a urinary tract infection then you should consult a doctor immediately. This is because these types of infections are usually treated with antibiotics. Left unchecked, the infection may spread upwards through the urinary tract and may infect the bladder and the kidneys, causing serious complications.

Along with the treatment prescribed by your doctor you can try certain natural remedies that may help to speed up the recovery process. However, these remedies should only be attempted after consulting your doctor.

  • The first step is to drink plenty of water. Drinking a lot of water helps to flush the bacteria away, and in turn helps the antibiotics in killing off the infection. If you are not used to drinking plain water you can substitute it with unsweetened fresh fruit juices. Avoid drinking alcohol, fizzy beverages or sugary drinks and avoid eating foods high in sugar, such as chocolates and cakes. This is because the sugar content in these foods is a nutrient on which bacteria thrive.
  • A special mention needs to be made of cranberry juice. Cranberry juice is reputed to be very effective in lessening the intensity of pain and any burning sensation you may be experiencing while urinating.
  • Another popular remedy for urinary tract infections is drinking barley water. This can be made at home by boiling 2 to 3 tablespoons of barley seeds with a liter of water. Once the mixture is boiling, allow it to simmer until it has thickened. Let it cool before drinking it at regular intervals.
  • Vitamins A & C can also help to bolster the body’s immune system and help fight off the infection more effectively.
  • Women should avoid the use of tampons, and rely on sanitary pads instead. After urination, they should dry themselves by wiping from forward to back rather than the other way around as it minimizes the risk of further infection from bacteria in the anal region. Maintaining proper hygiene is essential in preventing a reinfection.
