Foods & Treatment For Gallbladder Sludge

By Patricia | February 3, 2010

The gallbladder is an organ that functions as a storage area for bile which then moves into the small intestine and aids in the digestive process by neutralizing and processing fat and other acids. Sometimes the bile builds up when other particles such as calcium salts, cholesterol crystals and fats attach and accumulate along with it. The sludge which is yellow green in colour may also accumulate as a reaction to some kinds of medicines, the result of crash dieting which throws the body into survival mode cutting down on less important functions and during pregnancy. The condition is in most cases asymptomatic and you need not worry about it as it is likely to disappear when the agent that causes it disappears. If symptomatic you are likely to develop gall stones, biliary colic, pancreatitis and sometimes acute cholangitis. The symptoms of this condition are nausea and vomiting accompanied by abdominal pain. It would be advisable to see a doctor if this is the case and she or he will take an ultrasound and check for gall stones and the extent of sludge formation. If serious you may have to undergo surgery for the condition.

Remedy And Sludge Diet

There are, however, a few home remedies that you can try out and these include making sure never to skip breakfast and having short meals throughout the day. This will make sure that the gallbladder works throughout the day and is not overworked after heavy meals. A low calorie diet is also advisable especially if you can shift from say 2000 calories to 1,500, but make sure you do not lose on any of the essential nutrients. Drink about 6-7 litres of water a day so the body is cleansed of all toxins and avoid oily food high in fat content. Instead have warm water with a spoon of honey mixed into it every day and consume 2 cloves of garlic either in your food or raw before meals. A spoon of honey combined with a pinch of turmeric when consumed every morning can help ease the attacks. One teaspoon of apple cider vinegar mixed in a glass of apple juice can be drunk thrice a week. This solution is highly beneficial for treating gall bladder problems. Some experts prescribe a concoction made of extra virgin olive oil and lemon juice in equal proportions and chugged down in one gulp. This flush treatment could be pursued after consulting with your doctor.
