Deviated Nasal Septum: Symptoms & Home Remedies

By Patricia | August 31, 2009

The nasal septum is basically the cartilaginous bone that divides the nasal cavity into the two nostrils. Also known as the quadrangular cartilage, this septum is central and divides the cavity into two equal nostrils. However, when the cartilaginous ridge on the top of the septum lies abnormally, the passages become asymmetrical. The ridge is bent towards the left or the right direction and this could also lead to the obstruction of the nasal passage. This condition not only causes difficulty in breathing, but also leads to frequent bloody noses, headaches, snoring, and sleep related disorders.

Though the septum can deviate from its line quite easily, the actual abnormality occurs when the deviation is considerable. Usually, the person suffering from a deviated septum does not find out about it until pain is experienced. A lot of times, this condition goes completely undetected.

The condition is not really a medical issue if the deviation is mild. However when the airflow starts to get blocked due to this deviation, it mind need rectification. Still if the airway is blocked on one side of the nose, the other side is able to draw in the air.

Home Remedies

Though surgery is the only way to correct a deviated septum, it is not always necessary to go in for a surgery. Unless the deviated septum is causing you pain, you can relieve yourself of the symptoms through home remedies. Try to eat foods that have good amounts of vitamin C. Strawberries, cabbage, broccoli, oranges, lemon and grapefruit are all rich in vitamin C. Increase their intake in your diet. Also to help reduce the mucus secretion, reduce the amount of dairy products in your diet.

Magnesium and calcium will help induce regular sleep and take care of the sleep disorders that might be plaguing you. Take magnesium and calcium supplements regularly. If there is a lot of congestion in your chest and nasal cavity, you can fill a can of nasal spray with warm water and salt and spray the liquid into your nostrils. The use of hot peppers also naturally helps in decongestion.

It is important to maintain considerable distance from things that might cause you irritation in the nose or give you an allergy. If you have carpeting in your house, remove it. Also avoid pollen, feathers and other things that might cause you pain and irritation. Change your bed sheets regularly and keep your surroundings clean. If you are a smoker, avoid smoking. Passive smoking will also cause problems so stay away from those who smoke.
