Symptoms, Causes & Treatment for Swollen Ankles (Edema)

Swollen ankles or edema are caused due to fluid retention. As excessive fluid in the system fills the spaces between the cells it leads to swelling or swollen ankles. Though edema can happen in any part of the body it more often affects the feet, ankles and legs. Serious causes that are associated with swollen ankles are heart, kidney and blood vessel dysfunction while other reasons that contribute to this symptoms are high salt intake, stages of pregnancy and allergic reactions. Regular intake of laxatives, diuretics and birth control pills can also lead to swollen ankles. The swollen ankle may appear first thing in the morning and may worsen in nature. It is possible to place a finger and watch a gaping crater take form. Swollen ankle is not an ideal situation as it can lead to various other health disorders such as high blood pressure, swelling in hands, weight gain, headaches, puffy eyes and frequent urge to urinate.

Ways To Treat Swollen Ankles

Some basic ways to treat swollen ankles is to raise the leg above the hip region to prevent further damage. Leg elevation also reduces pressure on the swollen area giving it adequate rest. Limiting salt intake can also help reduce the risk of swollen ankles. Avoid intake of laxatives, diuretics and birth control pills to monitor the possibility of such medications causing swollen ankles. Taking short walks to break prolonged sitting position is an ideal tool to avoid swelling. Similarly, increasing muscle activity can also reduce chances of swollen ankles. Standing for a long time can also cause fluid retention, therefore maintaining either sitting or standing position for a long time span is best avoided. Walk the stairs; try some stretching exercises or a short walk to break the long held sitting or standing position. Drinking eight to ten glasses of water will keep the body hydrated, dilute salt levels and benefit the overall health of the system. Put your feet in water as water pressure forces fluid out of tissues. Herbal tea is also a recommended home remedy for swollen ankles. A decoction made of dried parsley or dandelion leaves in boiling water and steeped for ten minutes can yield positive benefits. This acts as a natural diuretic and helps eliminate accumulation of fluids from the system. Applying peppermint or lavender oil is also known to soothe swollen ankles. These simple tips will help reduce the swelling in the feet.
