Irritant And Allergic Contact Dermatitis

Given that skin is not only the largest organ of the human body, but also the most exposed one, it is exposed to a number of different irritants that cause various reactions. When your skin has a reaction on coming in contact with another substance, it is known as contact dermatitis. Contact dermatitis caused by metal is not very unusual and causes a number of people to be extremely careful about the kind of jewelry they choose to wear. Most often, the reaction of the skin is to do with the nickel content of gold or silver. However, a number of people are unaware that there is some nickel content in other products like cell phone parts, belt buckles and even zippers. While the condition is often localized to the affected part, contact dermatitis has been known to spread through the whole system on occasion. Also, the condition has also shown signs of becoming more sensitive over a period of time. While people are most often allergic to the presence of nickel, it is important to point out that sterling silver also has some copper content which could also be the source of your allergy. It is important to know exactly which metal or combination of metals is affecting you, so that you could reduce the exposure of your skin to it, thereby preventing any future attack of contact dermatitis.

Treatment

While one of the first reactions that the condition prompts a person to perform is to scratch the affected area, it is important that you do not do so as this could possibly cause a secondary infection. If you find it absolutely necessary, rub the itchy area with your fingertips instead of increasing the likelihood of trauma or break in the skin by using your nails. Soothe your body and calm your inflamed and irritated skin by taking a long bath with some baking soda or oatmeal added to the bath water. While this may not cure the rash, this treatment can go a long way in making your skin feel better. The use of an icepack applied frequently over the affected area will also prove very soothing as it will also improve circulation of the blood in that area. The most effective way to treat an allergic condition is the use of some kind of over the counter hydrocortisone creams. They help to significantly reduce the itch and inflammation of the condition.
