Yoga For Defective Vision

First of all, there's nothing to get worked up about.

Defective vision is a very ordinary complaint these days. The primary reasons for eye problems are reading in poor light (either too dim or too bright), too much reading, reading in moving vehicles, excessive TV, films and artificial food.

I think that, the prevalent notion that the use of glasses can correct all cases of faulty vision is based on the premise that such problems are the result of long-term ocular modifications. This hypothesis is wrong since faulty vision comes from functional derangements that can be corrected by simple natural treatments.

The 3 main reasons for faulty vision are mental strain, wrong diet and improper blood and nerve supply.

Mental strain: It puts corresponding physical strain on the eyes, their muscles and nerves. In my opinion the lesser flaws are largely the result of mental strain owing to over work, fear, anxiety, etc.

Wrong Feeding: The muscles and blood vessels around one's eyes contribute to the obstructing process because of improper metabolism resulting from an imbalanced and too-concentrated diet.

Improper blood and nerve supply: Anything that can interfere either with the blood vessels or with the nerves of the eyes can be the cause of faulty vision. The muscles covering the upper portion of the spine at the back of the neck are the main seat of the mechanical intrusion with the blood and nerve supply to the eyes.

Four Yogic exercises I would prescribe for strengthening the optic nerve's known as Trataka should be practised daily. Certain Yogasanas such as Bhujanghasana, Shalabhasana, Yogamudra, Paschimotthanasana and Kriyas like Jala Neti are also beneficial for the eyes. Others include:

  • Neck Exercises
  • Sun gazing
  • Water splashing
  • Palming
  • Proper diet
