Breathing right is a very important part of exercising. For any kind of exercise to be successful, it is important for the practitioner to breathe in the correct amount of oxygen during exercise. However, as important as it is, there is a lot of debate about what is the correct way to breathe during exercise.

The activity that you are performing largely dictates the kind of breathing that you will be doing while performing the exercise. Respiration during exercise is extremely important in order to achieve your exercise goals. The expansion of the lungs during exercise is extremely important. This helps increase the aerobic capacity.

Breathing During Running

While yoga and aerobic exercises are performed in definitive patterns, other exercises like cardio training may require changing your patterns of breathing. When you are performing any kind of cardio training, like swimming, running or cycling, your breathing rhythm and the cardio activity might not always be synchronized. For instance, when you are doing an uphill exercise like running or cycling up a hill, your breathing is heavier than when you are going downhill.

It is most important to avoid any kind of shallow breathing when you are performing cardio exercises. Shallow breathing usually occurs only when the you are either stressed too much due to the exercise you are performing or that you have not been able to establish the correct breathing pattern as required by the exercise.

Breathing During Exercise

If you are breathing correctly during your cardio vascular workout, your training is much more efficient and you get both power and stability. Your strength and your endurance also increase manifold. The correct breathing pattern also helps in the relaxation of your mind and body and can make your body more flexible. If your breathing during running or any other workout is shallow, try and take deeper breaths; however, do not try to hold in the breath. If you have trouble breathing during exercise, wait for some time and rest yourself before beginning again.

Strength and endurance training such as weight lifting, requires a lot of exertion. Therefore the breathing patterns are also different. Ideally, you should exhale at the time of exertion. For other exercises like Pilates, the simple rule of breathing is to inhale while preparing for the exercise and then exhaling when the move is being executed. This may be a little difficult to remember at first, but over a period of time, it can be mastered and the benefits of it can be reaped.

For relaxation exercises like tai chi and yoga, it is ideal to focus on deeper breathing from the upper abdomen. This kind of breathing moves your diaphragm. This kind of breathing helps you execute each of your moves with deliberation. The intake of air is slow so that oxygen can be inhaled properly.
