Essential oils are extracted from flowers, leaves, fruits and barks of trees. For example we have essential oils of jasmine, rose, thyme, jojoba, cinnamon, nutmeg, sandalwood and lemon, to name just a few. These essential oils have therapeutic and medicinal value, and are used to cure many physical and mental ailments. Skin diseases, lung problems and depression are only some of the ailments that benefit with the use of essential oils.

Essential oils are available in bottles, and because they are highly concentrated, they should be mixed or diluted before use. For example, a few drops of essential oil may be mixed with creams and lotions, or carrier oils like grape seed or olive oil, before applying on the body, or a few drops may be mixed in bathwater, or used in essential oil air diffusers for inhalation.

Essential oils and aromatherapy: Essential oils are most effective as part of aromatherapy. In this case, the essential oil is diffused and the aroma is inhaled, giving a calming effect. There are many types of essential oil diffusers available, ranging from the simple and low cost to more elaborate and high end ones.

Tissue essential oil diffuser: This is very simple and can be done at home. Just put a few drops of the essential oil on a piece of absorbent tissue, and leave it in a corner of the room. It would be most effective if it is placed under or in front of a fan, which would help to disperse the aroma.

Essential oil candles: While you can buy essential oil candles in the market, you can also make your own, with any ordinary candle. Light a candle, and wait for the wax to melt a little. Now snuff off the candle, put a drop of essential oil in the melted wax and light the candle again. But do be careful, because some essential oils are highly inflammable.

Steam diffuser: Boil water in a pan, and put a few drops of essential oil. The steam will help to disperse the aroma.
