Runny Nose Symptoms

You have an upper respiratory tract infection that could most likely be a case of rhinitis or common cold. The cause of this could be either an allergy or because of a viral infection. In most situations, this is something that just has to run its course, as there is no treatment for a viral infection except the body’s own immune system. What you are probably interested in more than anything else is to alleviate the symptoms and feel a bit more comfortable.

How To Cure Runny Nose

Fundamentally, a runny nose is the body secreting mucus. This is an inflammatory response triggered by the body’s immune system, to save the tissues of the respiratory tract from further damage caused by pathogenic organisms. In the normal course of a healthy life, the body secretes mucus in the nose as part of the filtration system and humidifying system for air before it reaches the lungs. Without this function, we would be prone to many more lower-respiratory tract infections, thus causing the tissues of the lungs to dry out faster. When an infection occurs and the inflammation follows on, a substance called histamine causes an excess production of mucus. Curing a runny nose, therefore, is a simple matter of blocking the production of histamine with an antihistamine. A popular antihistamine is diphenhydramine. This would be the active ingredient in most decongestants.

Remedies & Treatment for runny nose:

There are quite a few natural cures as well. Firstly, you need to ensure that your body is fighting the infection from within before you embark on curing yourself. This involves taking proper rest, not subjecting yourself to extreme temperature changes and nourishing yourself adequately. To start with, start a course of ginger tea. Ginger is one of the most effective anti-inflammatory remedies and should be had as an addition to tea or green tea and always drunk hot. Next, have a spicy diet that is rich in chili. Again, this is a very good decongestant, as you may have noticed whenever you have eaten spicy food. Have a lot of soup with garlic in it, as this is also an antiseptic. Similarly even chewing on a clove of garlic would have the same effect but may not be as pleasant as a bowl of soup. Always have these hot and keep the temperature of the preparations you make high, as this is the key to fighting off a cold and a runny nose. Avoid any kind of cold liquid intake.
