Allergic Skin Reactions

By Patricia | April 26, 2010

An allergic reaction occurs when the immune system of the body responds to the entrance of a foreign substance in the body. When the body detects the presence of a foreign substance, the immune system is alerted. Under normal circumstances the immune system provides protection to the body against harmful allergens such as toxins and bacteria. But in some cases, the immune system overreacts to an agent which is actually quite harmless. This is when an allergic reaction or a hypersensitivity reaction occurs.

An allergen could be anything from dust or pollen to chemicals contained in cosmetics or glues. When the allergen comes in contact with the body, a reaction may occur either in that particular area only or all over the body. Redness or rash may develop on the skin and itchiness in the eyes could also develop. Many other symptoms may also occur depending on the type of allergen and the sensitivity of the body to it. In very rare cases, the reaction may be so severe that it could prove to be life threatening. Most reactions, however, are not very serious such as minor skin rashes or sneezing from hay fever. The type of allergic reaction that occurs also depends on the area of the body that is involved. Also, the allergic reactions to the same allergen can be displayed differently in various individuals. In cases of skin rash, other symptoms may also occur such as swelling, blisters, crusting and welts.

Treatment For Allergic Reactions And Rashes

There are several home remedies that help in alleviating skin rashes caused by allergic reactions. However, if the reaction is severe or seems to be spreading, it is advisable to consult a doctor immediately. For minor skin rashes, chamomile tea works very well in reducing the symptoms. Add some dried or fresh chamomile flowers to boiling water and cleanse the affected area with the solution after straining it. You could also apply olive oil to the area as it will penetrate through the skin’s surface and promote healing. Aloe vera is beneficial in treating most skin ailments and most skin rashes are known to subside after the application of aloe vera gel. Itching and irritation can be reduced by applying baking soda to the skin. You can also prepare an effective poultice by blending basil leaves, garlic, salt, pepper and olive oil. Apply this to the affected skin twice daily for relief from redness and itching.
