Yoga Postures To Control PCOS

What Is Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS)

Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS) is an endocrine disorder known to affect almost 15% of women of the childbearing age. A secondary finding in most cases, PCOS is identified by very irregular or a lack of periods, infertility, hirsuitism or hair loss sending many patients to the doctors. The main function of the ovaries is to produce eggs but in PCOS the ovary does not expel the matured eggs and a little fluid starts to gather within the immature follicles. This helps form multiple cysts that cause hormonal imbalance.

PCOS is known to afflict one in 10 women in the USA alone. In fact, it is considered to be one of the main causes of feminine infertility in America. On the other hand, if you are able to diagnose and treat it early, you will be able to heal yourself as well as reduce risks of long-term complications. These include diabetes and heart conditions, besides others. If treated early PCOS can be even cured quite easily.

How Does Yoga Help To Overcome PCOS

A number of studies have proven that Yoga is extremely beneficial in treating PCOS, as well as infertility and related reproductive conditions. Our pituitary glands regulate the endocrine metabolism of our system, so by treating the pituitary gland and endocrine system you are, eventually, able to cure yourself of PCOS. Yoga, if practiced regularly, helps to regulate the endocrine metabolism and, as PCOS is an endocrinal disorder, the asanas (Yoga postures) and pranayama (breathing exercise) help bring back normalcy.

Women suffering from the condition, who have practiced yoga for long, have reported amazing results. Not only does it help in healing PCOS and the whole body but it improves overall health giving you a great boost. Yoga does this by toning up and strengthening the system, it helps in weight control and in regulating all the internal systems of the body. Through the practice of Yoga the vital Life force is channeled up, stimulating all the functions of the nerve plexus as well as the endocrine glands that are responsible for secreting the hormones.

Yoga For PCOS Includes The Following Program:

  • Asanas (yoga poses) done standing, sitting and lying on your back. Avoid inverted and prone postures.
  • Plenty of slow breathing. Follow this pattern: inhale for 5 counts, exhale in 10, very slowly. You must also do these pranayamas (breathing exercises): Mild Kapalabhatti (Skull Cleansing), Anuloma-Viloma (Alternate Nostrib Breathing) and Ujjayi (Ocean Breath).
  • Practice plenty of Shavasana (Corpse pose) at least 2 – 3 times a day. PCOS might be a hereditary or a genetic disorder. However, it can still be cured, and relaxation plays a great part in this process.
  • Follow a diet that is Yogic and Sattvic. This means a diet that is pure and simple, and primarily vegetarian.
  • Keep away from stress and tension ridden situations. Worrying isn’t going to help you one bit.
