Vomiting And Nausea In Children

If your child is vomiting, the underlying cause could be a stomach infection or any other viral infection or even an allergic reaction to certain kinds of food or medicine. In such a case, the vomiting symptoms will not last very long, once the underlying conditions are addressed. If however, the nausea symptoms are accompanied by diarrhea or fever, you should seek medical advice immediately. If your child’s vomiting persists and if she is refusing to eat liquids or if she is crying without tears, then you should seek medical advice immediately. In the meanwhile, to nurse vomiting symptoms at home, you can follow a few simple methods. Give your child’s stomach a rest and skip one regular meal until the symptoms subside. In the meantime, you can substitute the meal with oral rehydration solutions that contain essential nutrients like salt and sugar.

Treatment

Once your child feels a sensation of hunger, you can shift him or her on a diet of fluids. Vomiting leads to severe dehydration as the body loses essential fluids very rapidly. It is therefore essential, even when your child is on a diet of clear fluids, to make sure that he/she is consuming essential fluids at regular intervals. If your child is unwilling to drink water, try giving him/her ice chips or a washcloth soaked with cold water. If your child does not experience vomiting after consuming clear fluids, you can start with crackers or dry toast and other easily digestible foods. You can even gradually start on rice and potatoes. Avoid all oily, deep-fried foods, and milk and milk products.

One efficient and simple home remedy is to offer your child some lukewarm cola. A cup of lukewarm cola that has been stirred and is moderately flat helps curb nausea. Another effective remedy for nausea is lemon juice. Juice made from a fresh lemon with salt and sugar is an effective rehydrating solution. Smelling a half slice of lemon also controls sensations of nausea. Ginger is very useful in treating nausea at home. Make a mixture of ginger juice and honey to help control nausea. Alternatively, you can try giving your child ginger tea or a solution made from lime juice, mint juice, honey, and ginger juice to reduce vomiting. Cardamom is also a useful remedy for curing symptoms of nausea. Take a few cardamom seeds that have been roasted dry, powder them finely and mix this with a teaspoon of honey. Give this mixture to your child to help control vomiting.
