Treating Female Hair Loss

Female hair loss can occur due to a wide variety of reasons. In some cases the cause of hair loss could be genetic factors, while in other cases, hormonal changes, stress, diet and illness could be the triggers. Many women experience hair loss because of hormonal changes in the body. Fluctuations in the estrogen levels of the body can result in loss of hair. This can take place due to pregnancy, miscarriages or birth control pills. Hormone replacement therapy can also trigger hair loss in many women. Many women undergo hair loss after childbirth. This is because during pregnancy the level of progesterone increases and that of estrogen decreases. As such the hair remains in a resting stage. After childbirth, when the new hair starts to grow once again, the hair that was resting is shed, resulting in hair fall. This is a temporary condition and is not a cause for concern.

Hair Loss and Diet

Disorders such as anemia, anorexia, bulimia, thyroid problems, liver dysfunctions and infections caused by fungus or other protozoa commonly result in hair loss. High fever can also sometimes lead to hair loss as increases in body temperature can alter the normal growth cycle of the hair. Diet plays an important role in hair growth and inadequate intake of proteins zinc and essential fatty acids can cause deficiencies which lead to hair loss. The hair responds immediately to physical and emotional stress that is experienced by the body. As such many women report hair loss during periods of high stress and anxiety.

Home Remedies

Treatment for hair loss is dependent on the cause and the condition associated with it. There are also many home remedies that help in treating hair loss. An effective hair tonic can be made by boiling pieces of dried Indian gooseberry in coconut oil. Scalp massages using rosemary or tea tree essential oils are also beneficial in reducing hair fall. Another effective remedy is to soak a couple of tablespoons of fenugreek seeds in water overnight. The next morning, grind the seeds into a paste and apply all over the scalp. Since diet plays an important role in the health of the hair, it is important to consume sufficient amounts of protein through foods such as chicken or fish. Iron rich food such as dried fruit, lean red meat, and soya beans are also necessary for proper hair growth. Also, drink plenty of water every day and consume lots of fruits and vegetables.
