(August 18, 2008)

Hi, I am 27 year old man suffering from hair loss. Please suggest yoga asanas or Ayurvedic remedies which check the receding hair line at least for some years if not grow back my hair.

Hair is considered to enhance a person's beauty. One should take good care of their tresses and at times pampered it so that the health of the hair is maintained. Hair loss can affect women, men and children. Loss of hair can be depressing and frustrating. Hair loss or baldness is excessive loss of hair from the scalp that generally occurs due to hereditary, aging and medication. In certain cases, inadequate or faulty nutrition, stress, illness and unclean condition of hair can lead to hair loss.

Certain remedies that are considered beneficial for hair loss are:

  • Massage your scalp with fingers. This practice will allow circulation of the blood in the head thus improving the health of the hair.

  • Drink juice prepared with lettuce and spinach leaves for better growth of the hair.

  • Boil rosemary, nettle, burdock, peach leaf and sage in water. Strain the water from the herbs and use this water to wash your hair daily.

  • A well balanced diet consisting of all the essential nutrients in right amount can be beneficial.

  • Certain measures that are taken to improve the health of the hair are: regular oiling of the hair, shampooing of the hair, removal of dandruff, avoiding stress and tension.

Certain postures in yoga help in reducing the muscle tension in the neck. Vajrasana (Diamond pose) can help in reducing hair fall and can improve the health of the hair. Fold both the legs in the knee area so that the toes touch the ground. Sit straight in the gap that is formed by both the heels. Place the palms on the knees. This asana is considered to be a meditation posture and is beneficial for the reduction of stress and worry.

Shirshasana (Head stand) can promote and improve the health of the scalp. This asana can help in preventing hair loss as well as graying of hair. Kneel down and clasp the elbows with your hands. Place the elbows on the ground and interlock the fingers and place it in front of you. An equilateral triangle is formed with the hands and the elbows. Bend the top of the head on the floor with the back of the head placed against the fingers. Raise your hips and straighten the knees. Bring your feet close to the head by walking little steps without bending your knees. Raise your feet slowly and point them towards the sky. Keep your feet relaxed. Remain in this position for few minutes.
