Home Remedies to Prevent Razor Burn

By Patricia | July 3, 2009

Irritated skin and bumps after shaving the bikini area are usually caused by razor burn. This can happen when you do not prep the skin properly, if you use a dull razor blade, or even try to shave too fast. One way that you can prevent this from happening is to shave just after a bath. This will allow the hair follicles to be soft and the skin will be less likely irritated.

Some of the best home remedies are meant to prevent razor burn before it happens. Here are some:

  • Make a hot compress with a drop of lavender essential oil. Apply to the skin.
  • Use moisturizing oil like jojoba or avocado.
  • Apple cider vinegar is an antiseptic. Apply to the affected areas.
  • Mash strawberries and mix with sour cream. Apply to the skin to get relief within about ten minutes. To refresh and calm the skin use this mask twice a week.
  • Aloe Vera is very soothing to irritated skin.
  • Dissolve two uncoated aspirins in a teaspoon of warm water and make a paste. Apply paste to the burning skin and allow it to set for ten to fifteen minutes. Wash with lukewarm water.
  • Consume foods rich in Vitamin C to allow the skin to renew itself.
  • Shave in the direction of hair growth. This lessens the friction.
  • You can make an after-shave lotion by mixing one tablespoon each of dried comfrey leaves and dried calendula flowers into a half of a cup of witch hazel extract. Let sit et for two weeks. Strain and then mix a quarter cup of the witch hazel mixture with a quarter cup of rose water. To this solution you will add a quarter of a teaspoon of vegetable glycerin, 5 drops of lavender essential oil and five drops of sandal wood essential oil. Store in a container and place in a cool place. Shake it well before each use. This mixture will last for more than six months.
  • Apply a hydrocortisone cream.
  • Benzoyl peroxide, an ingredient found in acne creams and face washes, can minimize hair bumps.
  • Apply an astringent.

Irritated skin and red bumps can be very painful. Keeping the area clean and dry can help minimize irritation. Soothing the skin afterwards with an astringent or a lotion can help keep bumps from appearing. These remedies will help you the before, during and after in your shaving routine.
