Dry Chapped Peeling Lips

The lips are part of the skin, but consist of fewer layers than the rest of the skin. As such the lips are much more sensitive and prone to bruises, cuts and burns. Dry winter air dries the lips, leading to cracking and chapping. Burns may also result due to contact with hot drinks. Spicy food can also cause a burning sensation in the lips. The skin is kept lubricated and hydrated with oil that is naturally produced by the body’s sebaceous or oil glands. However, the oil glands are not present in the lips and so the lips are prone to drying. Allergic reaction could also result in peeling and drying of the skin. Certain foods could cause burning and swelling in the lips. Use of cosmetics such as lipsticks may also have this effect, especially if the lipstick has a high chemical content or if it has passed its expiry date. Sun exposure could also cause the lips to crack and peel.

The lips require a great deal of care and attention. You need to keep them moisturized using a mild moisturizer. Apply sunscreen on the lips when stepping out into the sun. Refrain from using cosmetics on the lips such as lip sticks, balms and gloss until the condition has cleared. Invest in good quality cosmetics that are alcohol free and mild on the skin. Honey is an excellent remedy for nourishing the lips. It also has anti-bacterial properties that help to arrest the spread of bacteria. Infections and inflammation is thus prevented. Honey may also be mixed with olive oil and massaged into the lips. Cigarette smoke is very harmful for the lips and dries them out, in addition to darkening them. The best way to keep the lips hydrated is to consume plenty of water and other fluids such as fresh fruit juices.

Petroleum Jelly , Aloe Vera Chapped Lips

A remedy that is highly beneficial in treating dry and peeling lips is the application of fresh aloe vera gel. Cucumber is also helpful in soothing burning and irritation on the lips. Apply grated cucumber or place slices of cucumber on the lips. Milk cream may also be applied to the lips. This will reduce the dryness and soften the lips. You can apply petroleum jelly to provide moisture to the lips. Applying cocoa butter to the lips will also serve to nourish and moisturize them. You can apply vitamin E to the lips in order to reduce burning and peeling.
