Swelling in the ankles can denote a number of problems. One of the commonest things it can be indicative of is water retention. Water retention can happen due to almost any cause. It can be caused due to general everyday things such as excessive salt intake, or can also be a result of liver, kidney or heart disease. If you have been suffering for this problem from over a month now, you need to get a physical medical consultation as to what the cause of the problem might be. If there is nothing seriously wrong with you, then you can simply assume things such as excessive salt intake and not enough release of fluids from the body. If one of your ankles is swollen, then it could be due to an injury of some sort. Check and see if you have hurt yourself in the recent past and if you have, adopt appropriate treatment measures to take care of it. One of the best natural remedies for internal injuries such as sprains, strains, muscle pulls and so on is application of Arnica tincture. This is an herbal extract and is found to be exceptionally good with healing and soothing muscle and tendon problems.

In order to treat problems such as water retention, you should start with drastically increasing your water intake. Keep in mind that the more water you drink, the more it will be flushed out of your system. You should also, at the same time cut back on your salt intake. If you are having sesame in your food, you need to stop having it at once. Sesame seeds, sauce, or powder are all the objects that will stop you from urinating. You need to also start taking some diuretics such as asparagus and white radish. These will help to not only purify your system, they will also help by making you urinate more and frequently. You can also have melon, artichoke and watercress. These will also be good for you at this point. Cut back on processed drinks and foods, which are extremely high in salt content and can only add to your water retention. In particular, you should not eat preserved foods, as these contain the one thing that has hidden and huge amounts of sodium. Make it a point to check the nutritional facts of everything you eat. This will tell you how much salt you are taking in without realizing.
