Yoga for Fitness

Yoga is a physical, mental and spiritual discipline with.

It was developed in India around 5,000 years.  The term Yoga is derived from the Sanskrit root “Yujir Yogey” meaning to yoke, to put together or to unite.  So, the Yoga’s objective is to unite. Unite what, you may ask.

For a start, the conflicting mind, body, emotions, in a bid to bring about perfect working harmony in the system. On a spiritual level, Yoga aims to bring about union of the Individual Self with the Absolute Self.

All this is achieved through a discipline consisting of physical poses, breathing exercises, diet, lifestyle and meditation.

In these days and times, Yoga’s focus is more on the physical and mental benefits.  There is a clear-cut distinction between Yoga and the stretching and normal exercise.  All conventional exercises are goal oriented and include performing a set of sit-ups or push-ups.  Yoga, however, is a process that teaches you ways to center your awareness while doing certain poses and breathing exercises.

Yoga has tremendous fitness benefits; these include enhanced physical fitness, stress reduction, overall well being, clarity of mind, and deeper understanding of oneself.  Men and women regardless of age, sex, health condition, financial status, creed, and religion can practise Yoga. Moreover, Yoga can also be modified to enable disabled folks or those with special needs. All Yoga poses develop muscle strength, alignment, flexibility and agility. Overall, they help you look and feel a lot better.

Practicing Yoga regularly helps keep you fit; checks cholesterol levels, lowers weight, stabilizes blood pressure and enhances heart performance.  People, who actively wish to bring stress levels, should do so by silencing their minds. The body, in turn, works on healing itself. In this way, Yoga is not just a way to get ship-shape on different levels, but also as a technique for self-healing. How’s that for overall fitness.
