Yoga for Thyroid
Thyroid problems can be treated with Yoga. It will also help other glands namely pituitary gland, adrenal and pineal glands to work properly and efficiently. There are a number of asanas or poses you should practice so as to stimulate all the above glands. You will also find improvement in overall health.
There are two types of thyroid problems, hypothyroidism and hyperthyroidism.
Cure for both types of thyroid problems through Yoga:
Yoga Poses for Thyroid
- Surya Namaskara (Sun salulation pose sequence): This sequence is ideal for curing many illnesses; this pose is a combination of several different poses.
- Viparita Karni Mudra (Legs-Up-The Wall Pose): This pose requires an individual to raise their legs against the wall. It increases the blood flow to the upper body and therefore has the ability of refreshing you within minutes.
- Sarvangasana (Shoulderstand): This pose is a step ahead to the Legs-Up the Wall pose. Here your head and shoulder touches the floor, while your back too has to be alleviated. The Shoulderstand increases blood supply to brain and heart, it also helps in maintaining blood pressure and starts helping thyroid gland work smoothly.
- Matsyasana (Fish Pose): In this pose you need to fold your legs in Lotus pose while lying down. Make your hands hold the toes of your feet. Slowly start lifting your chest up and your head should remain touching to the ground. This pose is very useful to increase breathing and to stretch the lungs. Along with the lungs automatically the glands are exercised.
- Halasana (Plough Pose): This pose stretches your back, spinal column, waist and can provide instant relaxation to the shoulders. In the Plough pose you should lie down straight down. Raise your hands upwards; it should be vertical to your body. Now start lifting your legs and take them to back of your head and touch the floor. Now place your hands on the ground, next to your body. Remain in this pose as per your comfort level.
- Bhujangasana (The Cobra Pose): Here you require to be lying face down, with your chin touching the floor. Your arms and legs should be straight next to your body. Slowly bring up your hands near your chest and lift your chin. Then lift your chest and finally your navel. This is not a push up, so the rest of your body should be touching the floor.
After the completion of these poses, make sure you relax with the Shavasana (Dead body pose).
People suffering from thyroid problems need to practice all the postures at least once a day. You can see positive effects of Yoga within a fortnight.
