There are white and small bumps on the edge of my lip, my lip is swollen and causing pain.

Bumps on lips can have many reasons. Many a times while we eat foods that are too hot or spicy, lips might get scalded. Daily activities, injuries of the lips could also cause swelling of the lips. Unlike our skin, lips are made of mucous cells and are much more delicate than our skin. Hence any type of harsh remedy is not advised as they might aggravate the burning and make it a worse situation. It can also be a bump like cyst called mucocele which is a cyst containing mucin produced by the salivary gland. It usually happens due to the rupturing of one the salivary gland ducts. Mucoceles are more commom in children because of the habit of sucking on the lower lip. This cyst is formed on the inner surface of the lips. These cysts are painless and do not need any medical treatment as such. It is only when the mucocele is persistent that it needs a check from the doctor.

Remedies For Lip Bumps

If the bump on the lip is out of lip scalding or an injury then there are some very simple home remedies for injured lips. First wash the lip gently. Do not use warm or hot water. Use a mild soap. Smear a little honey on the lips. This will relieve the hot sensation. You can also apply castor oil which is a good healer. Apply it on the bump and the other affected area and check in the morning for any positive changes. Continue applying both honey and castor oil till the sensations last and till the bump is visible. This can be stopped as soon as the lip is back to normal.

If you suspect a mucocele, it is advised to consult a doctor first to make sure if it is a mucocele. Some home remedies can help reduce the mucocele. Mix some salt with warm water, rinse mouth with this mixture at least four times a day. Continue this for two to three days. If there is reduction in the size of the cyst, continue the treatment. Evening prim rose oil also helps in reducing mucoceles. Apply this oil every day at least twice a day. Never try to open a mucocele at home as it can lead to a lot of other infections. In case of a persistent and unusually enduring mucocele, take medical advice as such cysts would sometimes require a small surgery for their removal.
