Lichen Planus is a rash that can occur on tissues in the mouth, around the ankles and wrists and in the genital area. From your description, you have developed an oral inflammation of Lichen Planus. Strangely not much is known about what causes this chronic skin condition or how to cure it. As of now there is no definite cure for the disease and most treatments are aimed at merely managing the symptoms and clear the rash. If your rash is very mild, your doctor may not even prescribe any medication.

Common treatments for Lichen Planus in the mouth include:

  • Using an anesthetic mouthwash that will numb the mouth and help make eating easier.
  • Using pastes, sprays or lozenges containing corticosteroids that reduce the swelling and redness of the skin in the mouth.
  • Gargling with an antiseptic mouthwash to reduce the build up of plaque in the mouth, as it is believed that plaque may aggravate the inflammation.
  • Taking corticosteroid tablets to treat severe cases of oral Lichen Planus. However, this is prescribed only on a short-term basis, as the potential side effects of corticosteroids can be quite unpleasant.
  • Your doctor may prescribe a type of treatment known as immunomodulating agents. These could include topical creams or tablets that work by suppressing the immune system and reducing the possible cause of Lichen Planus.
