Causes And Treatment for Itching Around Scrotum

By Patricia | February 18, 2010

Causes

Often, excessive sweating around the area of the scrotum could lead to a mild bacterial infection that causes an itching sensation. This could also very well be a sign of something more serious. If your itching persists after trying some natural remedies and self-care, you should consult a dermatologist. Bacteria thrive in those regions of the body that are very moist. Because of the location of the scrotum, the area tends to get moist with sweat and does not get any exposure to air. Moisture levels thus build in the sensitive skin surrounding the scrotum, thereby causing bacterial infections and an itching sensation. It is important to seek medical advice if the itching is persistent, as it may be a sign of underlying problems or could lead to serious skin disorders like eczema. A dermatologist may be able to ascertain the nature of fungus or bacteria that is causing the infection and then prescribe a specific antifungal powder or cream for local application.

Remedies

Maintaining good personal hygiene is essential when caring for an itch. For immediate relief, wash the area with warm water and a mild disinfectant and then make sure to keep the area dry. Wear loose-fitting, cotton clothing to allow the area to breathe and to prevent moisture build-up. Avoid wearing tight-fitting or synthetic underwear as they accelerate the build up of moisture and are harsh on the skin. Try to use a mild detergent to wash clothes and undergarments as the itching could be an allergic reaction to the chemical ingredients of your detergent. Use a mild soap to bathe and preferably one that is not perfumed. It is also important to keep your nails clipped short so as to avoid injuring yourself and breaking the skin while itching. As far as possible, try to avoid scratching the area because breaking the skin may worsen the condition and lead to other infections.

Tea tree oil is a natural anti fungal remedy. Apply tea tree oil on the affected area after washing it thoroughly to help treat the itch. Honey is an effective antiseptic as well. Apply honey directly on the affected area twice a day and leave it on for an hour before washing it off. Increase the intake of garlic in your diet. Garlic is an effective remedy for curing an itch caused by a fungal infection. Reduce your intake of carbohydrates and fried and greasy foods.
