Curing tonsillitis depends on how severe the condition is in the first place. If you have acute tonsillitis then the usual course of action is an antibiotics and this should alleviate the situation. If however this doesn’t work and it gets worse due to drug resistance or any other number of factors, you will have developed chronic tonsillitis and this can only be solved by surgically removing your tonsils. This usually is a safe procedure that won’t have any effect on you but since your tonsils are part of your lymphatic system, taking the tonsils out will greatly diminish your capacity to fight respiratory infections. Usually, when things reach this stage, there is no option to choose and surgery is the only option.

The surgical option to remove your tonsils will only be taken if you have had repeated attacks of tonsillitis or if your infection has been prolonged and threatens to spread. Typically, and with proper antibiotics, you should be fine within a week. In some rare instances, this might extend to two weeks. In this time, you can probably aid the efforts of the doctors by some home remedies like the use of honey. This is an easy and pleasant form of treatment. Honey’s properties as an antimicrobial are quite well known and also its benefits as an antioxidant are also being explored. Of course, the quantity of honey you would have to consume would be considerable so try and have a few spoons of honey that is warmed, every hour, if possible. Do not swallow it immediately and let it sit in the back of your mouth for a while before swallowing. Remember that all remedies for tonsillitis focus on an amount of warmth that needs to be applied to the area to reduce the swelling and to kill off surface bacteria. Ginger also is a good treatment and an excellent antimicrobial. Make a preparation of ginger and lime juice and have it every hour. For even more effect, and if you are feeling brave, cut a slice of ginger and place it as close to the back of your teeth as you can.

Turmeric is also a powerful antiseptic agent. If you can acquire this in its powdered form, it can be had in a preparation with milk. In a glass of milk, mix some salt and add turmeric powder, taste occasionally for strength and pungency. When it is just right for your palette, take a mouthful and let it sit in the back of throat for a while before swallowing it slowly.
